Evening of Wishes 2024
Birthday Bash Logo

On March 7th, 2024, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area hosted their annual Evening of Wishes Gala. The theme for this year was “Birthday Bash” to celebrate the organization’s 40th year of granting life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. I developed the look and feel of the event to be an elegant red to compliment the black and white color scheme the Events team wanted. Below you’ll see many projects I worked on to promote the event, as well as, projects for the day of the event.

The first thing created for this event was the “Birthday Bash” logo. How did we get there? The logo had to be extravagant, classy, and fun while adhering to the organization’s branding guidelines. The logo also had to signify a Make-A-Wish party.

My initial brainstorming sketches for the Birthday Bash logo

As I sketched out ideas, I was intrigued by the idea of an element replacing a vowel in the words of the logo so I went with the start replacing the a’s in “Birthday Bash”. Staying true to our branding, I used our sans serif font of choice: Lato.

Birthday Bash first concept in blue and white - lowercase

Birthday Bash second concept in blue and white - capitalized

The initial concepts felt successful when the “a” was outlined in the star, but the font was not working. It was boring and stiff, not an ideal look for a grand celebration for the milestone the Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area chapter hit. I decided to add a different font from our brand’s repertoire.

Birthday Bash third concept - a mix of the capitalized concept, along with a decorative font for the “B”

This was a step in the right direction! The “Great Vibes” font for “Evening of Wishes” and for both “B’s” in Birthday Bash add a level of elegance that the previous iterations lacked. The main feedback was to change the font from Lato to Droid Serif, our brand’s serif font.

Birthday Bash fourth concept - bold Droid Serif with Great Vibes

Birthday Bash fifth concept - regular Droid Serif with Great Vibes

The fifth iteration was the design the Events and Marketing team approved! Based on the colors used for the event, the white version ended as the primary logo to use while the blue one was used in the case of white space. The last step was to add colors to the stars to give it a pop of color!
